Career Coaching in Midlife: When Success No Longer Feels Enough

Many midlife professionals don’t wake up one morning hating their job.

It’s rarely dramatic.
Instead, it’s quieter.

A gradual sense of:
  • Restlessness
  • Reduced energy
  • Loss of meaning
  • Plateau
  • Or simply wondering, “Is this really it?”

You may be competent. Experienced. Financially stable.
You may be competent. Experienced. Financially stable.

But something feels misaligned.

The Midlife Career Shift

In our 20s and 30s, career decisions are often driven by growth, income and opportunity.
By midlife, the questions change:

  • Do I want this pace for another decade?
  • Does this role still reflect who I am?
  • Am I staying because it’s right — or because it’s safe?
  • What would change look like now?

This isn’t failure.
It’s development.

Does this sound familiar? Many people say things like: "I feel stupid, I have everything, great job, great life, why do I want to change?"
Or: "I am being forced into this, maybe now is a good time for a reset"

Psychologists refer to midlife as a period of reassessment — not collapse. A time when values, health and identity evolve.
But many professionals push those questions aside because change feels risky.

Why Career Dissatisfaction Often Goes Unspoken

There are practical reasons:
  • Financial responsibilities
  • Family commitments
  • Fear of starting again
  • Concern about age
  • Loss of status

But then there are those emotional ones:
  • Imposter feelings
  • Fear of regret
  • Anxiety about making the wrong move
  • Worry about others’ reactions

So people stay.
Sometimes wisely.
Sometimes unnecessarily.

Now I'm not saying jack it all in, stuff it.... But take a measured look at what YOU want, and what is realistic. Don't let it eat you up, I know this is really, really hard!


What Career Coaching Actually Is (and Isn’t)

Lets get rid of the b*****t, career coaching is not:
  • CV rewriting alone
  • Motivational speaking
  • “Manifest your dream job” advice
  • Reckless reinvention

With a good coach It is structured, adult decision-making support.

It creates space to examine:
  • What’s genuinely misaligned
  • What can be redesigned within your current role
  • Whether a pivot is realistic
  • How health and energy influence career decisions
  • What a sustainable next chapter looks like, and not just financial but what YOU want!
  • ​And, how to make that start to change.....,
In midlife, career decisions must account for wellbeing, not just ambition.

Common Themes in Midlife Career Coaching

From my personal experience, the same patterns appear repeatedly:

1. Staying Too Long in a Role That No Longer Fits
Out of loyalty. Fear. Or comfort.

2. Burnout Disguised as Career Dissatisfaction
Sometimes it isn’t the career — it’s exhaustion.

3. Over-Identification With Status
​
If your job title changes, who are you? (after all you've worked a long time to achieve what you have)

4. Underestimating Transferable Skills
Decades of experience often go unrecognised by the individual. (very common, you are worth much, much more)

5. Health Signals Being Ignored
Stress-related symptoms often drive the desire for change — but aren’t named directly.

Career and health are rarely separate in midlife, please don't ignore this, no good to you once you're dead! Sorry to be blunt.

Let's be honest - What Makes Career Change Sustainable?

The goal is not impulsive departure.
It’s clarity.
That may mean:
  • Redesigning your current role
  • Reducing hours
  • Setting firmer boundaries
  • Preparing for a gradual pivot
  • Exploring new sectors carefully
  • Or confirming that staying is actually the right choice​
Sometimes the outcome is change.
Sometimes it’s renewed commitment with healthier structure.
​Both are valid!

I do not like hype. certainly no pressure. Not unrealistic transformation narratives. (I read so much rubbish on what YOU should do!)
