Pre-Diabetes
Pre-diabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes.
It is estimated that about 1 in 3 adults could be pre diabetic.
What causes pre-diabetes?
Prediabetes is caused by a combination of factors, including:
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Family history of diabetes
- Age (over 45)
- Race or ethnicity
- Certain medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Certain medications, such as steroids
What are the symptoms of prediabetes?
Prediabetes often has no symptoms. However, some people may experience:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Increased hunger
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Numbness or tingling in the feet or hands
- Frequent infections
- Slow-healing sores
- Unintended weight loss
How is prediabetes diagnosed?
Prediabetes is diagnosed with a blood test. Your doctor will order a fasting blood sugar test or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
What are the risks of prediabetes?
People with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
How can I prevent prediabetes?
There are things you can do to help prevent prediabetes, such as:
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Eating a healthy diet
- Getting regular physical activity
- Quitting smoking
- Limiting alcohol intake
- Managing stress
How is prediabetes treated?
There is no cure for prediabetes, but there are steps you can take to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. These steps include:
